Webcam Eye Tracking - at your service!

Look at your project through the user's eyes with a simple online head and eye tracking software. Webcam online eye tracking is an innovative method that predicts a human eye gaze point using only webcams as data collectors. RealEye uses the computing power of a regular PC/laptop to run AI (Deep neural network) that analyzes images coming from a webcam. The AI detects a panelists’ pupils movements and predicts the eye gaze point with an accuracy of ~127px. What does it mean? Simplicity and efficiency! To use eye tracking and successfully run a study you don’t need any additional eye tracking device.

There's no need to download an app or install any software to conduct mobile eye tracking study. Everything is running in a mobile web browser.
Use our online study creator to set up the study: control display times, triggers, display order (can be random) and follow-up questionnaires to create the study flow.
The calibration process lasts ~30-seconds, and it uses 40 calibration dots displayed on various backgrounds to provide the highest accuracy.
Our eye tracking software works even in very low lighting conditions. However, participant cannot be seated in pitch black room when entering the study. Therefore, every panelist must pass the calibration check before continuing the test.
RealEye makes sure that the participant's head is in the correct position. In case the participant is moving too much, they are being asked to go back to the original position.

Filter the participants by age, gender, data quality or tags and see results immediately.
See gaze point, gaze plot, or fixation plot for individual participants. You can slow down the playback and export the video to your desktop.
    • For fixation based data: fixation counter, time to first fixation (TTFF), average fixation time, average time spent, viewed by
    • For gaze based data: total time, average time per view, average first view, viewed by, average revisits
RealEye uses an algorithm similar to the I-VT (Velocity-Threshold Identification) fixation filter. Learn more about our filter here: Fixation Filter - Support
The system is grading every participant based on:
    • Sampling rate
    • Data integrity
    • Percentage of gaze on the screen

The results are available on the dashboard as soon as the participant finishes their test. Use tags to describe the participant for further analysis.
Download the data as CSV files or use RealEye API. Read more about available exports and API.
Take a look at individual data charts to discover gaze behavior for every participant and see how fixation filter settings are filtering the data.

LIVE/Hosted Sessions

RealEye allows you to run live interviews with your participants and see what they are paying attention to while you speak. You can maintain voice communication using 3rd party communicators like Zoom, Google Meet, MS Teams, or others.
  1. Send your participant a "Hosted Session" test link.
  2. Wait until the connection is ready.
  3. See your participant screen with gaze prediction LIVE.
  4. Desktop video recording will be stored among with the results.
*This feature requires a decent computer/laptop (min. 4GB RAM) and strong internet connection on both sides.

Eye tracking devices - different approaches to eye tracking

Eye tracking systems measure the eye position, movement, and pupil size. This way eye trackers detect the areas in which the user has an interest. And eye tracking technology has very much advanced in recent years!

Interview with Andrew Duchowski

We're pleased to present our next episode of the short interview series: this time, we chatted with Andrew Duchowski from Clemson US, who told us about the current challenges and opportunities in the eye-tracking field.

Trusted by Universities from all over the World

"We used RealEye for a lab assignment about selection attention to visual media, experimenting with several different short videos that exemplified different structural features of video that direct attention (e.g., cuts, motion, appearance of faces). Everyone in the class was able to provide eye tracking data for the videos, and analyze and discuss the data obtained from the entire class — all within a 90 minute lab.
The interface and analytics were excellent. We’d love to make the software a part of the class moving forward."

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are the eye-tracking results?

RealEye studies are proven to be around 110 px accurate. This allows analyzing users interaction on a website with precision reaching the size of a single button. We predict the gaze point with frequency up to 60 Hz.For in-depth analysis of webcam eye-tracking accuracy check the following articles:

How does online webcam eye-tracking work?

Webcam eye-tracking is an innovative method that predicts a person's gaze point. We use the computing power of regular PC/laptop to run AI (Deep neural network) that analyzes images coming from a webcam. The AI detects a panelist's face, pupils and predicts a gaze point. All of this is performed entirely in a web browser in real-time. Thanks to this, panelists do not have to worry about their privacy. We do not send any image or sound to our servers. We only store the gaze point predictions from our AI, in the form of basic text data similar to "Timestamp: 10, GazePointX: 200, GazePointY: 330".

You can read more about eye-tracking here .

Who can participate in my study?

Either your own or RealEye participants. You can invite your users or panel and share the study with them using a participation link. All they need to have is a laptop/PC with a webcam. We also have a network of panelists from all over the world - mainly from the UK and the US. Randomly picked users can be assigned to your task. They are called RealEye participants. We will not show them your stimuli before the test starts, so their interaction will be natural.

Note: RealEye participants can't take part in a 'Live Website' studies and studies longer than 10 minutes. Read more about the limitations here.

What’s the difference between own and RealEye panelists?

Your own participant is any person that you’ll invite using a participation link to your study. RealEye participant is a randomly picked person from our network of panelists from all over the world - mainly from the UK and the US. They can be hired to participate in the eye-tracking study, but not to participate in any external tool (eg. survey).

Note: RealEye participants can't take part in a 'Live Website' studies and studies longer than 10 minutes. Read more about the limitations here

Can I get more participants?

You can get additional participants at any time you need it. This will increase your limit in the current billing period only.

When you order RealEye panelists, we make sure to provide the highest quality results. All recordings are checked by us to make sure that you get results with an accuracy of fewer than 175 pixels and at least a 20 Hz sampling rate. Assuring high-quality results usually requires us to pay for and check more panelists than you've requested, but we take that cost on us - so you pay only for the best results.

What equipment or setup does RealEye require?

How to track panelists?

To connect external tool (eg. survey) and test results with a participant you will need to modify your test recruitment link to pass in the variables you want to track. The panel provider must add the variables (different for every panelist) to the RealEye URL dynamically.

You can add custom variables to your recruitment link using a ? (question mark) and join multiple variables using an & (ampersand).

For example, if the study link is
https://www.realeye.io/test/1a0e40f7-714e-4c9f-8b28-836530be8c7d/
then you need to add parameters like this:
https://www.realeye.io/test/1a0e40f7-714e-4c9f-8b28-836530be8c7d/?user=ben&company=realeye

In this example 2 variables were added: user and company ID. This allows you to track who completed your test and match the results with results from an external tool while exporting data.
If you pass a variable called 'realeye-participant-external_id' - the value of this variable will be visible on the results dashboards next to participant demographic data.

Can I export the data to CSV (or any other format)?

Yes, you can download the data collected during the study as a CSV file. For more details please refer to https://support.realeye.io/data-export-to-csv/

Also, you can download each AOI CSV file.

If there’s any data that you would like the CSV file to include, please contact us and we’ll provide any additional data.

Do you provide Eye-Tracking Reports?

Our tool doesn’t generate reports. As a result you’ll receive gaze and mouse recordings, heatmaps with an AOI tool and CSV files (including the AOI data). You can download all the data you need: heatmaps as a PNG file, recordings as an MP4 file and the CSV file, easily translated into an excel file.

Can I integrate RealEye with other tools?

You can easily integrate the RealEye tool with external tools (eg. surveys), but also compare the results obtained from other tools using our CSV file (i.e. by the timestamp).

Can I test live websites?

Yes, you can test live websites with no need to include any scripts or code on the tested websites.
